Get better and improved GPS locks WiFi on your Nokia N97.
A friend of mine recently bought a Nokia N97. after trying to get GPS signal he brought it to me. It was almost impossible to get GPS signals and a stable GPS lock. After some inspection I found the phone did not even have a GPS aerial or a WiFi aerial. so we set about experimenting with various aerial hacks and eventually found the ultimate solution.
For the WiFi aerial a thin piece of copper wire was inserted into the WiFi plug hole , about 10 cm long and coiled where the OEM aerial would be , a thin piece of copper plate was placed over the copper wire and glued into place , note the laminate was stripped from the copper wire. The result: the phone can now connect to WiFi on the second floor of a building where as before it had to be within 20 meters of the WiFi router.
The GPS aerial: A piece of copper wire ( laminate stripped off) was inserted into the GPS hole plug and attached to a custom copper plate ( +- 0.1 mm thick ) running from the front of the phone down the side and across the battery. The result: a stable GPS signal after about 1 minute and greatly improved accuracy.

Update: EMF shielding added between the GPS antenna and the body of the phone , a non OEM backplane was donated to the 'project' , but this did not improve signal quality , the EMF shielding was taken from the back of a laptop keyboard.
Testing on the first mod was successful IF the phone was in a static position and in a semi open area , but worked poorly when inside the house or when in a vehicle. The EMF shielding has improved the GPS reception greatly , now locking on to GPS inside the house and able to to be used for navigation in the car using OVI Maps.
